Yoga means union. The union of the individual soul with the
Universal Spirit is yoga.  But this is too abstract a notion to be easily
understood, so for our level of understanding I say that yoga is the
union of body with the mind and of mind with the soul. Ninety per
cent of us are suffering in some way, physically, mentally or
spiritually.  The science of yoga helps us to keep the body as a
temple so that it becomes as clean as the soul. The body is lazy, the
mind is vibrant and the soul luminous.. (Iyengar B.K.S. Light on
    Yoga).

The word Yoga means "to join or yoke together,“. It brings the body and
mind together into one harmonious experience. The art of Yoga (Hatha)
are the more active poses. These are most often depicted in media. The
poses have been around for more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, the
desire for greater health, longevity, and heightened self-understanding
gave birth to this system of physical and mental exercise which has
spread throughout the world. Hatha Yoga is the path of Physical Yoga or
Yoga of Postures. It is the most popular branch of Yoga.
YOGA
Hatha Yoga considers the body as the vehicle for the soul. The practice of
Hatha Yoga will result in the union of the body and the soul, it aims to make
the body perfect and fill it with life force. A lot of different Yoga Styles
rooted in Hatha Yoga.  All these styles aim to balance the mind, the body,
and the spirit through the Asanas or poses; however, the emphasis varies.
Some place emphasis on the strict alignment of the body while some focus
on the coordination of breath and movement. It uses Physical Poses
(Asanas), Breathing Techniques (Pranayama), and Meditation in order to
bring the body in perfect health.Asanas help keep the body in motion. A
body in motion stays in motion.

Asanas help to keep muscle integrity, nerve fluidity and bone stability. It
also helps expel toxins through systems by increasing circulation and
flexibility .
ASANAS
MEDITATION
Meditation helps to remove negative thoughts,  calm the mind, and
allows us to turn our senses inward and stops the internal chatter. When the
mind is focused on a single thought, internal chatter stops. (Control of the
senses is central to the Yoga discipline).
“Meditation is integration-to make
the disintegrated parts of man
become one again.  When you say
that your body is different from your
mind, and your mind is different
from your soul, that means you are
disintegrating yourself. “(The Tree
of Yoga, pg143). B.K.S Iyengar
PRANAYAMA
Pranayama is a means of breath control that yogis use. In Sanskrit,
pra implies spiritual energy that descends from above. Na indicates
eternal divine vibration within us that allows us to grow and
evolve. Ya refers to the ability to harness, accummulate and
actively express this spiritual force. Ma simultaneous represents
the mother principle of the universe and the ability to control this
material energy through breath. Your breathing pattern is a
reflection of your mind.  If you are in a flight or fight situation (angry
or scared), your breath will be shallow, rapid and irregular.  The
opposite is also true, when you are relaxed or in deep thought,
your breathing pattern changes. It becomes slow, deep and
regulated. The state of mind is reflected in the quality of the
breath, controlling the breath is also controlling the state of mind.
Yogic breathing teaches how to control prana and thus control the
mind. The practice of asana and pranayama balances the nadis, the
sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
